Tom Felton, Warwick Davis and Devon Murray at Collector Mania
Thanks to the Hannan Family, for sending us a report from Collectormania III in Milton Keynes where Tom Felton (Draco Malfoy), Warwick Davis (Filius Flitwick) and Devon Murray (Seamus Finnigan) were present. The actors participated in a chat preceding a screening of CoS:
"They couldn't have been more charming (and funny!). Tom had to field off hoards of girls (again) but still stayed remarkably cheerful. Devon flitted around the place just being funny and chatting to anybody who wanted to talk. Tom, Warwick and Devon were more than happy to pose for pictures with fans and signed autographs before their talk.
They fielded questions from the audience ranging from the predictable "Tom do you have a girlfriend?" to "Do you get out of trouble in school more easily now that you are famous?" For those who are interested the answer to the first question is no Tom does not have a girlfriend currently and the second answer is basically no, but occasionally yes. Tom told a great story about getting in trouble in IT class for printing out something he shouldn't, but managed to get out of trouble by giving his teacher a signed photo! They also use the excuse of "Sorry, I left my books at the studio....." if they forget to do homework. That raised a smile or two!!
Devon (when he wasn't trying to annoy Tom) was charming and funny. He is also very friendly, and not at all big-headed about his fame. He and Warwick were very happy to pose for photos even when fans weren't paying for an autograph. We were seriously impressed with just how NICE and normal they all were.
Thanks for the report!!

Harry Potter Mentioned on SNL
Saturday Night Live made mention of the Harry Potter phenomenon tonight, commenting that Book Five's print run of 8.5 million books would merit the sixth book the title: "Harry Potter and the End of Trees."

New York Times Potter mention
Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times writer William Safire has mentioned HP in his weekly column, "On Language," in connection with the word "severe" in SARS:
"First, severe: rooted in the Latin severus, it has two meanings, related but distinct: ''serious'' and ''strict.'' Set aside the ''strict, harsh, cruel'' sense, expressed in the name of Severus Snape, the mean schoolteacher in the Harry Potter series."

Another Fanfic Author Gets Published
HP Fanfic author Laura Klotz has recently published a book entitled Saving the World in Your Spare Time: The Pocket Guide to Effecting Positive Change." The book is summarized thus:
This book is designed to help anyone who wants to change the world around them but isn’t sure how to go about it. ...Although primarily geared toward adults, the chatty tone in which the book is written makes it suitable for teenagers as well. It’s a valuable tool for educators, religious leaders, Scoutmasters, community officials, and others who need a resource for planning public service projects, as well as individuals who really want to help.
Laura Klotz is also known as Lady Norbert in the HP fanfic world - you can check out her stuff here.

Summary of Simpsons' Episode.
I was recently doing some digging on the Simpsons episode we will be seeing next season and on this site I found a summary that excludes the plot line mentioned awhile ago from Newsround (Saying that the family goes to England to find a girl Grandpa Simpson had a wartime fling with). Read at your own risk...
Mr. Burns loses a thousand-dollar bill that is quickly turned into the main display at the Museum of Modern Bart. After Burns shows up to reclaim his money, Bart realizes he still earned enough from charging admission to take the Simpsons to England. When they arrive, Marge begs Homer to make this an incident-free trip, which he actually succeeds at until he accidentally runs into the Queen. Now the only thing that will earn Homer a stay of execution is whether he can uncover the plot to poison her majesty. Meanwhile, Bart befriends Prince William.

Gaming Galore
No, not the quidditch one... HarryPotter.com recently added "The Staircase Game" to their "Fun and Games" section.
And even more gaming news! Here's a small blurb from Yahoo News about cross-promotion:
This fall will be the first year that EA will ship "Potter" games without a film release to hang a marketing plan on. But with the second DVD already on store shelves and the new book shipping in June, there will be "Potter" marketing out there.

You must be under 18 and get the essay to Scholastic one month before Book 5 is released - May 21, 2003.

Dan was *not* in a car accident today.
A story's been making the rounds on the web today claiming that Dan Radcliffe was in a car accident on the M1 after 10 this morning. We've been in touch with sources in the UK who confirmed with Warner Bros that there's no truth in the reports. There's been no car accident and Dan's been filming on set today.
We won't mention by name the site that has been putting up regular bulletins which purport to be about the accident, but we at TLC note that such behaviour is shameless manipulation of the fans and the fandom, and we frown on such things. Strongly.

50 days to go!
Sounds a bit redundant when we've got the counter up there, but as Muggle Pride wrote in to tell us, we're at the 50-day-mark. I don't know about you guys, but I'm about to lose it. As the Chipmunks might say, "We can hardly stand the wait, please Ju-une don't be late..."

Hi all, we've got some news from Nimbus:
The deadline for fandom sponsorship has been extended through June 15.
Ari Rapkin of Industrial Light and Magic has been announced as July 19's featured luncheon speaker. Rapkin's resume includes such movies as Jurassic Park III, Star Wars: Epsiode II and, of course, Harry Potter; her speech will offer insights into the secrets of film enhancement through computer animation. Rapkin joins Judith Krug, Director of the Office for Intellectual Freedom, American Library Association, as a featured speaker.
Go here to read about Nimbus' "Casting Contest," learn more about the exhibitors who will set up shop in Kumpulsive Alley (including Alivan's Wands and the manufacturer's of Lucius Malfoy's infamous CoS snake-cane), and keep up with all things Nimbus.
Nimbus attendees who are over 14 can also take part in a birthday party for Fiction Alley, which will take place on the evening of July 18. Keep tuned to Nimbus' official site and Live Journal for continued updates.

Dragon liver can cure a cold - Dragon powder grows hair!
And The New York Times' Science section highlights dragons in an article that notes how
scholars drawing on primitive art, fossilized bones and ancient legends are struggling to explain how cultures that had no contact with one another constructed mythical creatures so remarkably similar.
And in an interesting bit of synergy with the Harry Potter books, the Times' article mentions Edward Lhwyd, who was keeper of the Ashmolean Museum at Oxford until his death in 1709, the same year that Dragon breeding was outlawed by the Warlocks' Convention.

Book Magazine Scans
Thanks to iHarryPotter.net, you can see scans of the Book Magazine article in its entirety, and I can stop feeling guilty about it lying about the house unscanned. It should be noted that while there's no new information about canon in the article, it's a very nice summation of everything that's been said by JKR about Book Five in various interviews. (Also, they interviewed some schmoes about what they thought would happen in the book. Where do they get these people anyway? UPDATE: You can see part of the article (summation of things to come at Hogwarts and quotes from "experts") at Book Magazine's official site. I know iHP exceeded their bandwidth on those images - I'll try to get the rest scanned soon.

Jason Isaacs, who's playing the dual role of Mr Darling and Captain Hook in the upcoming PJ Hogan production, speaks a bit about films, childhood, and the unctuousness of Lucius Malfoy here. No snake-headed canes in sight, unfortunately.
