David Lynch is making a new movie with StudioCanal. In fact, he's already been shooting it under the radar for two years. Titled "INLAND EMPIRE" (in capitals, though Lynch doesn't explain why), it stars Laura Dern, along with Justin Theroux, Harry Dean Stanton, Jeremy Irons and a host of others Lynch won't specify.
In fact, there's still very little the enigmatic Lynch is comfortable to reveal about the movie.
"It's about a woman in trouble, and it's a mystery, and that's about all I want to say about it," he comments diffidently.
The title refers to the bleak residential area on the edge of the desert near L.A. -- the antithesis of the tony locale of his last movie "Mulholland Drive."
Lynch has shot much of his latest film in Poland with local actors, after making friends with the organizers of the Camerimage festival in Lodz. He's now back shooting in and around Los Angeles.
Even at this relatively advanced stage of production, Lynch is cagey about when it will be finished. But it's understood that StudioCanal is aiming for a world preem at Cannes next year.
"Making a film is a beautiful mystery," Lynch says. "You go deep into the wood, and you don't want to come out of that wood, but the time is coming very soon when I will have to."
Lynch has financed the production to date from his own resources, with his wife and longtime artistic collaborator Mary Sweeney producing. The budget is unknown.
StudioCanal, which financed "Mulholland Drive" and "The Straight Story," has come aboard "INLAND EMPIRE" to handle worldwide sales.

La notizia giunge su Cannes dalle colonne di “Variety” ed è di quelle da sollevare il morale: David Lynch è già da tempo al lavoro sul set del suo nuovo, segretissimo film. Titolo: “INLAND EMPIRE”, da scriversi tutto in lettere maiuscole, per esplicita e non chiarita volontà del regista stesso… Il quale non sembra disposto a dire troppo sul progetto: “E’ la storia di una donna in pericolo ed è un mstery, e questo è tutto ciò che voglio dire sul film”, ha dichiarato a Variety. “INLAND ELPIRE”, ad ogni modo, fa riferimento a un’area residenziale nel mezzo del deserto di Los Angeles, ma Lynch ha girato parte del film in Polonia, con attori locali, sulla scorta dell’amicizia nata con gli organizzatori del Festival Cameraimage di Lodz. Proprio dal direttore del festival polacco, Marek Zydowicz, si apprende del resto che il materiale girato “è una storia tipica di Lynch: il collasso tra due mondi, quello reale e quello immaginario”. Attualmente le riprese si svolgono a Los Angeles e la notizia interessante è che il regista di “Cuore selvaggio” sta girando in digitale. Del cast fanno parte attori lynchani come Laura Dern e Harry Dean Stanton, ma figura anche Jeremy Irons e a quanto pare vi saranno numerosi cameos. Il film sarà distribuito in tutto il mondo da Studio Canal, che già parla di una possibile partecipazione a Cannes 2006. Per ora Lynch è comunque nel pieno del furore creativo: come ha dichiarato a Variety: “Fare un film è un bellissimo mistero: entri nel bosco profondo e non vuoi più uscirne, ma molto presto arriverà il tempo in cui dovrò farlo”. Tra l'altro leggevo che quelli dello studio canal venderanno il film a scatola chiusa!!
Pare che Lynch non voglia lasciare agli acquirenti/venditori nessuna preview del suo film, nessuno script, nessun mini trailer, niente particolari sulla trama, insomma tutto in gran segreto nel classico Lynch style anche per chi il film dovrà acquistarlo e venderlo nel mondo!
